P.S I am not sure why, but am facing problem with installing Kubuntu/Ubuntu AMD64 on my desktop. Once the modules and services are loaded I can’t even get to GUI, meaning X-server not loadin’. Any ideas?

Are you talking about when running the CD? Or have you already installed, but just can’t get xserver to run?

I had a problem with the installer CD, which apparently has the new graphical installer. I happen to like the text installer anyway, which is on the alternate CD. This is how I eventually installed Dapper. The text installer is the same Debian text installer of previous versions.

I will note that I had a problem with my CD Rom on the regular installer disc, I believe, but the alternate worked just fine.

Perhaps this is your problem?

I really love Dapper. Hopefully you will get it installed too, so you can post your review for us.

I haven’t tried K/X(buntu) myself. Since I prefer Gnome, I may not for a while. However, I still would be interested to read any reviews of them.

I used Kubuntu a year ago in version 5.04. Sadly, I was not very impressed with it. I even gave it the benefit of the doubt and used it for a couple of months. I just felt that KDE crashed way too often, and caused my machine too much problems. Since then I have switched to Gnome and haven’t looked back. Perhaps KDE is better now?

Have you had the opportunity to use it at all? Or will this be your first time? Just wondering. Good luck.

I mean that if it’s Ubuntu, the Gnome is not on, with Kubuntu it’s KDE. It simply stalls with X.Org error, which doesn’t say anything much to mee. Had the same problem with Flight editions. I think it’s the mixture of 64bit platform + my card and monitor not setting correct sync.

I have started downloading the alternate cd, and hope to see Kubuntu x86_64 installed on desktop. I am more KDE user, hence I will fo with Kubuntu. I have installed 6.06 Ubuntu with Gnome, as note is old and Gnome is better for that.

The Kubuntu 6.06 has to be first time. The reason I want it also on my desktop apart from SUSE is to see the difference between the two.

I am thinking of writing about the pros and cons I see in SUSE and (K)Ubuntu when compared directly.

Nice, although not sure why they through the whole Ubuntu thing into it. It seems more Gnome specific. I’ve got my Gentoo box looking eerily like OS X even down to the login. I Apple products but not their high prices or closed source.

Hmm. Sounds weird why KDE would run, but not Gnome. Perhaps it has to do with your 64 bit platform? Or perhaps it might be your video card configuration.

So you say you installed Dapper on your notebook? How well does it run for you? What do you think?

Do you have Gnome installed at all on your Suse system? If so, how does it compare with Gnome on Ubuntu? Just curious.

Anyway, I will be looking forward to your review of Kubuntu.
