2007: Happy Holidays and New Year

pic01rz6 2007: Happy Holidays and New Year New year is knocking at our door steps and it is time to make gifts to our loved ones, and of course to yourself.

Apart from getting a new monitor, which I talked about before, I decided that it was not enough to satisfy my list of presents and decided to replace my HP hw6510 with HTC P3300 “Artemis”. I know it runs Windows, but it is the best as of today - plus I got there WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and it is small and coool. [My New 2007 Year Tech Gifts]

Oh, and I’ll vouch for the HTC products. I’ve had them forever, and they are amazing. I don’t like that they are Microsoft only, but they are still great products.

Check out http://www.xda-developers.com for the amazing forums. They have help on every aspect of tweaking, flashing, customizing, and hacking the HTC products. It is the single best resource out there.

Tnx Timothy for your info - I knew about this site and read forum posts to finally decide if I wanted P3300.

The thing is that I have Russian WM5 installed, and would like to have English. As far as I understand the only way to have English WM5 I will need to install the other version. Should I go for plain WWE version?

Also hope that it will be possible to upgrade to WM6 “Crossbow” in future with ease …. that would be simply great.

Well, I know I recently picked one up with a swedish (?) rom on it, and just reflashed it with the english, so that shouldn’t be an issue. Grab the WWE version, I like it fairly well. You will likely want to read up on a few of the “Homegrown” Roms that are out there. They normally are 2-3 times better than the standards. Basically it’s a different mix of software and settings. It doesn’t look like there are a lot for artemis yet, as it is pretty new, though development is speedy on it.

For flashing and unlocking, you need to either wait, or pay 20 pounds. I’ve never done this (I got an unlocked one) but others have had good experiences.

As for WM6, don’t get your panties in a wad. It sounds like it takes after vista. To much was promised, then all the good stuff was cut out. WM7 is what is making me wet my lips. Yes, I know it’s MS, but I have a guilty pleasure.

The couple of pieces of software to look at:

SPB Backup - $ - Essential. Won’t allow you to backup across rom flashes (nothing will) but insanely good because of the ability to restore backups without installing extra software after a hard reset. Google it.

SPB Plus - $ - This fixes you about 100 things that the standard OS does wrong. Plus, it gives you a safe mode for if you install a bad piece of software. That way you don’t “Brick” anything. Definately reccommend.

Opera - $ - Likely the best browser, and I use it on my desktop too. Opera.com

NetVNC - FOSS - Open source VNC client. Nice for Wifi. Grab it off sourceforge.

VXUtils - Free - Nice networking tools. Free, and pretty useful. Google it.

Nethack - FOSS - Gotta have it. ^_^ http://www.nethack.org/v343/ports/download-wince.html Grab the PPC version.

Age Of Empires - $ - Yes, it’s a great game. It works flawlessly on my HTC Wizard, and is likely the best one for PPC there is. If you want a good game, here it is. http://www.pdagameguide.com/age-of-empires.html

XCPUScalar - $ - You could also get OmapClock, which is free on the XDA-Developer boards, but this one is nice because of the dynamic clocking. Increases battery life quite a bit. http://www.immiersoft.com/index.html

OmapClock - Free (FOSS?) - Nice Overclocking utility. Overclocking with the OMAP850 (in the wizard and artemis) is perfectly safe. The worst that happens is a soft reset if you clock it to far. It doesn’t burn out the CPU due to the low heat of the processor, though it does use more battery if you overclock it (obviously). Grab it on the XDA Developer boards.

TomTom - $ - Artemis has embedded GPS (If I remember right) so this is an obvious. I personally don’t know much about GPS programs, but this seems easy to use.

SKTools -$ - Gotta have it. Best tool set out there. Don’t use the backup feature on WM5 though, at least last time I checked (1-2 years ago). It doesn’t function perfectly.

Pocket Mechanic - $ - Great techie tool for the PPC. Performance improvements, relocate function, storage cache manipulation, and allows you to defrag the storage card (very important. Windows based, remember?) http://www.antontomov.com/web/products/index.php?page=pocket_mechanic&cat=overview

I got my OMAP @260 via BatteryStatus app, and when I don’t need that raw power with a simple tap on today plugin it is back to 200 and then i suspend my gadget while lying in the pocket. I’ll try XCPUScaller later, as I had it on my hw6510. For GPS in Moscow i use PocketGPS Pro (very detailed map) and iGO when behind wheel. GPS on this one is awesome. WiFi is also working nicely as is bluetooth.

About Spb apps, I got all of them - must have for me, especially backup. Opera is my choice on mobiles. Don’t do gaming, so have some simple games, prefer to read RSS feeds when have time.

I tried flashing ROM but my gadget is not permitting …. very strange as it is not supposed to be locked, cause was bought not from a mobile service provider, but a store … though they have their own logo in bootlooder … I’ll call them to verify about this.

I’ll write a post on my other blog on what apps I use on my pocketpc.

I just tried XCPUScalar, and I wouldn’t recommend it anymore. I used to have it before on an XScale Processor, and when they released that they have support for my specific phone (The Wizard) I posted it here. I tried it out last night, and it kept making my phone soft reset intermitently. Apparently it isn’t stable enough on the OMAP 850. I didn’t try anything other than Autoscale, as that is what I wanted it for. (Dynamic overclocking based on use saves lots of battery life. That’s what I use it for.)

I removed it from the phone, and the resets stopped. So, I have to withdraw my reccommendation for XCPUScalar.

Sounds like you use the same basic process I do. OmapClock to overclock to (for me 255) and then clock back when not needed.

Where is your other blog? I’d love to see the writup you do.
