Ubuntu Netbook Remix Pre-Loaded

Ubuntu-150px Ubuntu Netbook Remix Pre-Loaded Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has hinted at the likelihood of an ultra-portable netbook pre-loaded with Ubuntu Remix in the very near future. Ubuntu Remix is the lightweight version of Ubuntu that Canonical announced last week.

Writing on his blog Shuttleworth says that “the Canonical OEM team has been approached by a number of OEMs who want to sell netbooks (small, low-cost laptops with an emphasis on the web) based on Ubuntu.”

Although Shuttleworth gives no indication of who these companies are he does say that Canonical is “working with two companies that want more radical user interface innovation. Canonical is participating directly in the design and implementation of one of those UI’s, and we’re integrating someone else’s UI on an Ubuntu base for the second project.

I think it was to be expected that Ubuntu Netbook Remix would be preloaded on newer UMPC’s. In my opinion, UMPC’s are more successful when targeting a more budget-friendly market - and so, Ubuntu Netbook Remix would save $100 or so that might’ve had to be spent on Windows.

Besides, Ubuntu’s grown into such a viable alternative to Windows as of late. Have you seen those screenshots of Ubuntu Netbook Remix? That thing is (arguably) better-looking than Windows.

Yups, have seen them. The thing is that UMPC require touchscreens, and I as I undestand that Netbook Remix is not touchscreen enabled. This is also true for MIDs. So, as far as I see, this OS will be primarily featured on mini/net notebooks.
