opensuse7tg1 openSUSE 11.0: Installing ATI and nVidia Video DriversWith openSUSE 11.0 the installation of ATI and nVidia video cards drivers is just 1-click away, no manual configuration of xorg.conf is required. Same is true for switching on Xgl, if you are using ATI card and prefer it over AIGLX, to get Compiz running, just launch simple-ccsm and enable compiz, once the driver is being installed.

1a. Click one of the 1-click install icons that corresponds to your video card:

1b. Or you can install it manually using the following command:

su -c “OCICLI http://opensuse-community.org/ati.ymp” (ATI cards)

su -c “OCICLI http://opensuse-community.org/nvidia.ymp” (nVidia cards)

1c. One more commandline way using new zypper:

For ATI cards:

zypper sa http://www2.ati.com/suse/11.0 ati

zypper in  x11-video-fglrxG01

For nVidia cards:

zypper sa http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.0 nvidia

zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG01

2. If for some reason the X-server didn’t detect the presence of new drivers once you restart your desktop environment:

ATI cards:

Open a terminal and type sudo aticonfig –initial. This will configure X to use the ATI driver and then restart the DE, by pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.

nVidia cards:

As root, type sax2 -r into a terminal window, and SaX will redetect the NVIDIA chipset and allow you to set up your desired resolution.

openSUSE 11.0 comes pre-installed with Compiz and Compiz Fusion 0.7.4 release.

This is great, as installing video drivers has been a troublesome area, and hopefully this new feature will make using openSUSE much more pleasant. Thanks to Jigish Gohil, you can always get the latest version of Compiz and Compiz Fusion in the X11:XGL openSUSE Build Service repository. In his home:cyberorg repository you can also find recent snapshots of the development tree, where you can also have direct access to a plethora of extra plugins developed by the Compiz Fusion developers.
